Gỗ nu thực chất là gì?
Nếu trong các loại đá quý kim cương là thứ quý giá nhất thì trong các loại gỗ, gỗ nu cũng là thứ quý giá nhất. Nu thực chất không phải là một loại cây lấy gỗ như các loại hương, sưa, đỏ, hoàng đàn … mà thực chất chỉ là một phần “dị tật xấu xí” của cây.
Theo định nghĩa của Wiktionary tiếng việt thì đây là gỗ từ bướu của các cây gỗ quý, cứng, có vân đẹp và được dùng làm bàn ghế hoặc đồ mỹ nghệ.
Gỗ nu là một danh từ chỉ chung về cách hình thành của một loại gỗ đặc biệt trên thân của các cây gỗ quý hiếm. Nu được sinh ra từ những vết dị tật, vết thương trên những cây có tuổi thọ lớn do bị chặt chém, bị gãy, bị sét đánh hoặc do những vết mối mọt sâu trong thân gỗ. Từ đó nguồn nhựa và dinh dưỡng nuôi cây bị gián đoạn, cản trở và tích tụ tại vết thương đó, dần dà tích tụ lại thành một cái bướu sần sùi trên cây qua hàng chục hàng trăm năm thì tạo thành nu. Gỗ nu phố biến hiện nay là nu hương, nu nghiến, nu sưa… trong đó nu nghiến là loại được ưa chuộng nhất, nhiều người còn gọi đó là ngọc nghiến.
Nghiến (danh pháp hai phần: Burretiodendron hsienmu) là một loài thực vật có hoa, trước đây được phân loại trong họ Đoạn (Tiliaceae) còn hiện nay thuộc phân họ Dombeyoideae của họ Cẩm quỳ (Malvaceae) nghĩa rộng. Nghiến sống ở Trung Quốc và Việt Nam. Vườn quốc gia Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng ở Quảng Bình có loại cây này. Gỗ nu hình dạng bên ngoài sần sùi, gỗ bên trong cứng và có nhiều vân uốn lượn kì dị không theo bất kì quy luật nào. Màu sắc gỗ nu nghiến tùy theo địa điểm và điều kiện sinh trưởng mà màu sắc cũng có đôi chút khác nhau như: màu mạch nha, màu vàng cẩm, vàng chanh, màu mật ong hay màu pha hổ phách. Gỗ nu nghiến có tính chất tươi thì dai, gỗ khô cứng và bền. Những khối gỗ nu có giá trị nhất thường là những khối bị chôn dưới đất, chịu sự tác động của mưa nắng độ ẩm và sự ăn mòn nhưng vẫn giữ nguyên khối mà không bị mục nát. Chính sự tôi luyện của tự nhiên này mà đó thực sự là những khúc gỗ tốt nhất.
Ngọc nghiến và Nu nghiến.
Một cách gọi khác mà ta thường nghe đó là Ngọc nghiến. Vậy Nu nghiến và Ngọc nghiến có khác nhau không? Thực chất thì Ngọc nghiến cũng là nu nghiến nhưng cứng hơn do cây mọc ở những vùng vách đá cằn cỗi và ít dinh dưỡng do đó mà thời gian hình thành cũng lâu hơn và gỗ cứng hơn rất nhiều. Loại này hiếm và giá thành cũng tương đối cao. Chúng ta thường nghe mua gỗ theo khối, nhưng đối với những loại gỗ quý như Nu thì đơn vị tính là Kg. Giá gỗ nu nghiến trung bình cũng tầm từ 1,5 đến 2 triệu đồng/kg còn đối với những loại gỗ hiếm ra Nu như Sưa thì giá tầm 24 – 25 triệu đồng/kg. Quả thực đây là một mức giá khá cao vì vậy Gỗ nu nói chung chỉ có giới đại gia mới dám chơi.
Tại sao gỗ nu lại đắt tiền như vậy?
Thứ nhất: Không phải cứ thân cây lớn là sẽ có nu. Trong hàng trăm cây gỗ lớn sẽ chỉ có một số cây tạo được vài mảng nu và thậm chí nhiều loại gỗ quý như sưa thì cả trăm cây chỉ gặp được một đến hai cây cho nu.
Thứ hai: Do cách hình thành đặc biệt nên vân gỗ nu không theo một sự sắp xếp cố định, vân xoắn ngẫu nhiên tạo những hình thù vền vện, không có tim gỗ do đó rất khó chế tác. Không chỉ những thợ vừa vừa không dám nhận chế tác loại gỗ này, mà ngay cả những nghệ nhân tay nghề cao đôi khi cũng phải ngao ngán. Nếu không có máy móc hỗ trợ thì làm xong một tác phẩm thì cũng phải cho ra đi ít là chục con dạo đục, nay có máy móc thì số đục bị hư cũng giảm đi đáng kể. Tuy nhiên không phải ai cũng dám làm mặc dù giá thợ cao gấp 2 – 3 lần bình thường.
Thứ ba: Thời gian chuẩn bị trước lúc chế tác lâu. Gỗ nu tuy cứng nhưng nếu chế tác không khéo có thể gây nứt vỡ và xuống màu sau một thời gian sử dụng. Do đó mà gỗ phải được áp dụng “Phơi sương” bằng cách tối đem phơi sương sáng mang vào mát trong nhiều tháng liền giúp hơi nước thoát chậm tự nhiên và làm cho các vân gỗ khít lại không bị tách hay nứt gãy.
Thứ tư: Tương truyền trong dân gian cho rằng sở hữu gỗ nu không những chỉ thể hiện đẳng cấp và gia thế mà còn có tác dụng mang lại may mắn, tài lộc và thịnh vượng cho gia chủ. Vì thế mà ngày càng có nhiều đại gia không tiếc tiền săn cho được những cặp lục bình gỗ nu khủng, những pho tượng di lặc gỗ nu tinh xảo ….để thể hiện đẳng cấp chơi gỗ của mình.
Chỉ với 4 lí do bên trên đã có thể lý giải vì sao giá những sản phẩm từ gỗ nu như tượng gỗ đẹp, lục bình gỗ nu …lại có giá cao đến như vậy. Đặc biệt đối với những khối nu có kích thước lớn, giá có thể được đưa lên cao hơn do nhiều người cùng muốn sở hữu nó.
Vậy làm cách nào để nhận biết gỗ nu thật?
Thứ nhất: Gỗ nu khi được sẻ thành từng lát mỏng sẽ phô được những vân gỗ tuyệt đẹp nhìn tựa như bức tranh phong thủy, kiểu này có thể thêm chữ nổi để làm tranh treo tường cũng khá phố biến. Tuy nhiên để biết ghép hay không cần chú ý lật mặt trên và dưới xem họa tiết có giống nhau hay khác nhau. Nếu đồng nhất tức là được cắt ra từ một khối, nếu có sự khác biệt chứng tỏ đã được ghép từ những thân gỗ khác nhau.
Thứ hai: Dùng đèn pin nhỏ soi vào các mắt nu (là những vòng tròn nhiều vân uốn lượn), càng nhiều vân nhỏ mảnh cuộn xung quanh mắt nu thì càng lâu năm và càng có giá trị.
Thứ ba: Dùng đầu ngón tay ấn mạnh xuống bề mặt gỗ nu, nếu móng bị cong mà mặt nụ không bị ảnh hưởng gì là gỗ nu thật, còn nếu để lại vết móng tay là gỗ nu giả.
